ABSTRACT
This chapter explores how the model of positioning theory might be used to make sense of three excerpts from a life-story interview. The example of identity in the making is based on a life-story interview carried out by Lidia Gallego Balsa with a young Chinese woman named Liu. The chapter addresses the way that Liu’s life story may be understood as shaped by some of the structuring spheres. Chinese immigrants stand out among immigrant groups in Spain due to their tendency to work in Chinese-owned and operated businesses, many of which are family-run. Liu speaks as an expert on the topic of being an immigrant, blending together epistemological statements of description and analysis.
