ABSTRACT

This chapter is my tribute to Srinivas soon after his death. It covers my reflections on mainly his contribution to sociology and social anthropology: building up of Departments of Sociology in Baroda and Delhi Universities, work towards organic integration of social anthropology under the rubric of sociology, promotion of comparative sociology, integration of the field view and the book view, and firm belief in empiricism as against other ‘isms’. The chapter ends with my appreciation of how Srinivas wore his achievements lightly and of his deep humanism.
