ABSTRACT

Unlike most previous works, a few are under the assumption that some particles in Korean are clitics. These works provide a new perspective on identifying linguistic units according to their morphosyntactic properties. First, we establish a theoretical framework for distinguishing affixes, clitics and (regular) words. Second, we review previous works providing clitic analyses. Third, we observe nominal and verbal morphotactic structures that comprise not only affixes but also various types of clitics. Fourth, we provide a new system of lexical categories that contain both regular words and clitics. With the establishment of the framework in this chapter, we will be ready to analyze particles on the basis of their morphosyntactic properties, which will lead to a proper identification of (syntactic) words.
