Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the occult in Lethaby's time, and the implications of the ideas associated with it for a reading of the cultural products to which it gave rise. It also explains in greater detail the socio-cultural context of the occult influences on Lethaby's thought and work. The chapter explores how various aspects of occultism exercised a crucial role in the culture of Victorian Britain, affecting areas such as science, psychology, politics, art and architecture.
