ABSTRACT

Chapter 2 explores theories of symbolism relevant to the occult and the semiotic techniques it habitually adopts. The chapter acknowledges Lethaby's appreciation of the psychological dimension of symbolism, and in light of this, Carl Jung's ideas on the psychological significance of religious, occult and esoteric symbolism are judged valuable in clarifying Lethaby's understanding and employment of such symbolism. The work of Charles Sanders Peirce, who produced some of the most distinctive and innovative research on the theory of signs and semiotics, is also examined as part of this chapter.
