ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 turns to explore more strictly ‘magical’ influences via a reading of A Beryl Shrine (1888), a drawing produced to accompany Dante Gabriel Rossetti's poem Rose Mary. The occult nature of the poem Rose Mary is examined as part of the chapter. The discussion is then developed to understand Lethaby's employment of magical artefacts and symbolism within his illustration, and then moves on to consider the inclusion of serpent imagery within the work. The chapter endeavours to demonstrate how A Beryl Shrine was intrinsic in forming the foundation on which Lethaby later developed his own ideas on the symbol.
