ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 expands on and substantiates the findings of the preceding two chapters by examining Lethaby's completed works for both magical and alchemical symbols, themes and devices. The distinct characteristics of both magic and alchemy are therefore elucidated in brief to assist the reader in understanding the nuances of the two fields. Lethaby's use of occult symbolism is compared to that of Johannes Ludovicus Mathieu Lauweriks (1864–1932), who was an overtly self-professed member of the Theosophical Society. By demonstrating parallels in the symbolic languages of Lethaby and of Lauweriks, the chapter explores the parallels and similarities between the two architects’ occult aims and outlooks.
