ABSTRACT

The MoJo: has been defined based on the affordances of mobile phones and their performative aspects. Mojo is characterised as producing rich media content using mobile phones, publishing live videos, using social media to circulate mojo stories, providing training on new tools and apps, looking at audience’s engagement and compiling citizen contributions, among others. MoJos are ‘multi-skilled’, defined as “the ability to perform tasks incumbent on certain news processes across more than one medium”, although individual reporters and the unions that support them might find alternative, pithier definitions. Blankenship offers an analogy which makes the blood run cold: “To compare this to an occupation more readily considered a ‘profession,’ imagine a single doctor who must diagnose a patient, perform the operation, complete all necessary billing and insurance paperwork, and then personally fill the prescribed medication.”.
