ABSTRACT

The greatest strength of the United Nations is that it is the only organisation which has a universal membership, is globally legitimate and has authenticated processes and clear responsibility for the maintenance of peace and progress. Peace must be viewed as an integral aspect of human happiness. In 1984, the UN General Assembly proclaimed in its resolution that the people have a sacred right to peace. Leaders endowed with spiritual resources can strengthen the cause of peace and people’s welfare. The end of the Cold War and seeming triumph of democracy generated optimism and a burst of activity that carried on into the 21st century. Our social and economic structures facilitate development of a close relationship between democracy, ecology and culture. Science and technology, market innovations, aspirations of the people and the religious and cultural values of the nation states would need to be given a vision that characterised public good.
