ABSTRACT

Chapter 5 covers aspects of language that help connect a whole text in an organized and fluid way. Writers use a number of grammatical resources that support organization of the text to make it comprehensible for the reader. These resources include how to structure the text so that the whole text connects to its topic and how the information in paragraphs flows and connects to the topic sentences that establish what the paragraph is about. In addition, how the Theme/new information within each clause connects fluidly across clauses in a text and focus the attention of the reader on the message of each sentence. Text connectives, reference ties, lexical ties, and ellipses are additional grammatical features that help the text come together. The chapter illustrates the challenges students have and offers ideas for lessons.

Grammatical features of the written language and structural organization of the genres also influence text organization. These will be covered more succinctly.
