ABSTRACT

The immigration from Europe that began in the sixteenth century impacted the historical sovereignty of American Indian tribes and healthcare for their people. Treaties of peace and treaties of war were used to eliminate the right of American Indians to own the land. Upon gaining independence, the United States assumed the role previously held by England with respect to American Indians. The United States acquired Russia’s rights to Alaska in 1867. The Treaty of Cession provided that Alaska Natives would be treated the same as aboriginal peoples in the rest of the United States. By the early 1830s, the US government’s relationships with Indian tribes had changed and President Andrew Jackson had come to view the tribes as obstacles to American expansion. In the case of American Indians, the majority culture forced its beliefs, values, and practices on them and removed them from their ancestral lands.
