ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces the idea of the defence of self, as a discreet system that is inter-personally goal corrected or intrapersonally goal corrected. The system of self-defence includes the fear system. Centering is especially relevant when considering the system for personal self-defence, which includes the two systems of: one fear and, two careseeking. The behaviour activated by the fear system is to manage things by oneself, and the behaviour activated by the careseeking system is to seek help from others. Self-defence is a system that is a part of us which includes the mechanism and processes that have built up through relations with others and reminds us of competence. Because fear system can kick in so rapidly, small failed careseeking attempts or clumsy exchanges can arouse this system for self-defence. Offering them the chance to consider their fear responses led to much discussion about the fear responses of those careseeking around them.
