ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the main features of effective school management with the features of effective classroom management. Effective school leaders are adept at managing people, command trust and have high expectations of staff. Effective teachers, like effective school leaders, are adept at managing pupils, command their trust and hold high expectations of pupils' potential achievement. In addition, schools that are effective tend to be those in which the leadership style is characterised as being consultative and where there is a sense of order and purpose. The effective head is identified as being someone able to motivate, enthuse and challenge staff but who takes ultimate responsibility in a crisis. Similarly, the effective teacher is someone who is able to motivate, enthuse and challenge pupils but who takes ultimate responsibility for orchestrating their learning. In the effective classroom, pupil learning is viewed in broader terms than individual learning and group work is fundamentally important in fostering and developing social skills.
