ABSTRACT

Occupational crime consists of offenses committed by individuals for themselves in the course of their occupations. This chapter looks at occupational crimes committed by businesspersons, politicians, government employees, labor union officials, physicians, pharmacists, and lawyers. These offenses include fraud, forgery, embezzlement, bribery, and extortion. Occupational crime must be understood as part of the economic system’s structure and culture. The norms and values that prevail in the pursuit of economic gain also regulate the activity by members of occupations and professions.
