ABSTRACT

The overall aim of the peacebuilding process is to enhance the indigenous capacity of any society to manage difficult situations without resorting to violence. Building and repairing roads that have been damaged as a result of the outbreak of violence, and strengthening infrastructure facilities like water supplies, healthcare, transportation and communication networks deserve special mention. Local efforts are very important and central to the process, and local actors should be encouraged to take more initiative in peacebuilding. Peacebuilding is especially a challenging task in the global south where many countries have suffered from armed struggle for decades. Peacebuilders are expected to create an atmosphere of political transparency and socio-economic justice, where poverty is reduced and democratic institutions are created. Sometimes peacebuilding processes not only collapse, but they also pave the way for more violence. Acts of terrorism or political violence often arise from feelings of extreme marginalisation and alienation.
