ABSTRACT
THE SYMBOLISM OF CHURCHES is really a backwater, but it is in backwaters that the water lilies grow. They flowered for most people in the Middle Ages perhaps once a year at the Feast of Dedication. For a few like Hugh or Richard of St Victor, for Abbot Suger at St Denis or Margery Kempe, throughout the year they inspired glimpses of the beauty of heavenly reality.
