ABSTRACT

Investigation of the counter culture at the micro level of individual behaviour and involvement (see chapters seven and eight) suggests that values are prior to action. People adopt counter-cultural lifestyles, either wholly or intermittently, because of the values they hold. Investigation of the counter culture at the macro level of economic change and population growth (as in chapters three and four) suggests that the opposite is the case: action is prior to values. Values arise from prior structural change. The link between macro- and micro-level analysis is generational consciousness.
