ABSTRACT

It is routinely noted in capoeira training that lessons for the roda (game) are lessons for life, and this opens intriguing methodological territory in terms of gathering data that has dual significance. The research responds to this challenge by adopting an emic approach, involving training and playing capoeira in order to access non-written discourses through learning and participation. The aesthetic turn in political theory and the theorisation of corporeality provide leads for analysing the music, movement and ritual. This chapter also presents an overview of capoeira, explaining key elements of the art and the duality of capoeira and life.
