ABSTRACT

People across a wide variety of cultures have come to expect fairness in everyday social and economic exchanges including those occurring within families, the workplace, educational settings, sporting events, and politics. The social and behavioral sciences over the past century and a half have permitted a more systematic and rigorous examination of issues related to fairness and justice, providing new answers to age-old questions, but also raising new ones. Together, their contributions reinforce the importance of fairness in social life.
