The Evaluation of Work.—The dynamograph, if it is arranged so as to indicate the effort, and the displacement at the point of application of that effort, is the proper instrument to measure the work done. Its graph shows the value of the effort and the amount of the displacement at any moment. Suppose the muscles produce a constant effort, represented by the ordinates y 1 ..., y n, in n seconds, and displace the resistance opposing them by distances 0x 1, x 1 x 2 ..., x n – 1x n The total work done by the nuscles will be the sum of the products 0x1 × y1 + x 1 x 2 + y2 + ..., say 0x × y (fig. 191).
