ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at the project itself but moves beyond the triangle of Writer-Producer-Director to examine some more refined producer skills such as working with Stars, Department Heads, choosing Below-the-line crew, working with the Post team and with Marketers and Distributors. It focuses on developing multiple projects with different writers in different mediums. For example, that undergraduates have got friends and access to the studio system and know how to navigate the international co-production system, it may be time to build up their company by branching out into the burgeoning world of TV. There is a common confusion between the figures of the executive producer and the show-runner, but while a traditional executive producer has total control of the fiction series, both at budget level and in creative decisions, the show-runner not only plays those roles but is also the creator from the very beginning.
