ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a summary of the Chinese Peace and assessment of China as participant and leader in fostering and building sustainable peace going forward. China has indeed come a long way as a peacekeeper, peacebuilder and peacemaker in Africa. Chinese Peace’s emphasis on sovereignty, political stability and state-led economic development has strengths and weaknesses. The focus on elites means that state-society tensions are ignored; the focus on political stability raises questions about civil liberties. Finally, faith in economic development as the one-size-fits-all answer attracts similar criticisms critics of the liberal peace have raised on the security-development nexus.
