ABSTRACT

This chapter draws together the existential elements which the reader was introduced to in Chapters 1 and 4. It considers philosophical ideas around the importance of relatedness, uncertainty, existential and ontological anxiety, freedom and responsibility, time and temporality, authenticity, values and beliefs, sedimentations and meaning, within the context of leadership. Under each aspect, it poses practical questions for aspiring existential leaders to reflect on. It considers how these existential issues fit well alongside other leadership models which combine emotional intelligence and existential analysis, e.g. Megel, Porras, Emery and Thompson, Lipman-Blumen etc. and demonstrates how these concepts have been developed into leadership profiles by Mengel, Reker and Reiss. These have drawn on existential works such as Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning.
