ABSTRACT

This chapter expands on enlarged cultural and literary context and notes how Darjeeling emerged as the focal point of the Nepalese renaissance. It explores the saga of Nepali endeavors for the upliftment of Nepali language passed through various phases, Nepali identity politics in British India, the emergence of Darjeeling as the springboard of political awakening in the region, and how these developments matched up to the expectations of the public in the Eastern Himalayas.
