ABSTRACT

The results of administering content analysis to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting’s (IRIB) news programs in Chapter 4 showed a clear distinction between how foreign versus domestic news get covered when it comes to the use of human rights language. Multimodal critical discourse analysis was conducted by exploring two foreign news packages containing a relatively high percentage of human rights language. This chapter discusses the results and presents the lexical analysis and visual semiotics to uncover any hidden ideologies such as hegemony and power relations. The first news package is regarding the case of Michael Brown’s shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, which took place back in 2014. This particular package was particularly impregnated with international human rights and humanitarian principles. The second package regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict was also saturated with such principles, and it is one of the ongoing cases covered on IRIB.
