ABSTRACT
This chapter discusses the national, divided attitude on religion as a key to the success of the musical. After exploring the nature of that divide, the author gives a detailed reading of the divergent meanings in the number ‘I Believe’—an exemplar for the masterful way Parker, Lopez and Stone represent the cultural difficulty with the topic of religion.
