ABSTRACT

By the fall of 1936 Hitler’s plans for the conquest of Central Europe had begun to take clear shape. Chamberlain gave a full report to the House of Commons of his recent dealings with Hitler. At a few minutes after 4:00 p.m. his account was dramatically interrupted by Sir John Simon with a copy of a telegram from Hitler inviting the Prime Minister and M. Daladier to meet with him and Mussolini the next day in Munich. Chamberlain in a note to Prague delivered by Newton after the Munich conference had begun, insisted on having “wide discretion.” ny pretense that the Munich “Accord” was an improvement upon the Godesberg ultimatum is naive. The march of events during the four months after Munich could have been prophesied with amazing accuracy, and indeed there were many, both inside and outside government circles in Britain and France who read the signs correctly.
