ABSTRACT

The significant variants found in O are so few in number (sixteen total, of which only four are substantive) and of so little effect as to make ascription of their origin uncertain. On the whole, it is difficult to imagine that Davenant had much of a hand in them; he was never known to have made so few changes, and those of so little import. It seems obvious that the several careless slips, conjectures, and misconstruals in O (see “Notes on Rejected Substantives,” at I.8, I.77, I.109, I.235, II.i.19, II.v.15, III.iv.35, IV.i.110, IV.ii.90, IV.v.6, V.iii.1, V.iii.25, and V.vi.22/23) were made by the compositor or editor. 1
