ABSTRACT

I wrote this chapter in response to an invitation by Geoffrey Walford of Oxford University, who was editing a collection of educational researchers’ reflections on work which had a special significance for them. This chapter consists of my reflective account of the first substantial classroom-based research project I was involved in, carried out with Derek Edwards and Janet Maybin, which was the basis of the book Common Knowledge (Edwards & Mercer, Routledge, 1987; second edition 2013).
