ABSTRACT

Agriculture may be one of the most difficult areas to convert to renewable energy, because it may be difficult to run farm equipment on anything except liquid fuels, and it may be difficult to make them renewably. In order to become part of ecological living – to be sustainable indefinitely – agriculture has to change as much as industry, and in similar ways. The way most food is grown can be called “industrial agriculture.” Hunter-gathering for food, using wood and other biomass for fire, and farming with hand tools and draft animals all produced more energy than people put into them. The idea that food production is responsible for about half of all Greenhouse gases emissions may seem hard to believe. The alternative to synthetic fertilizer use is to recycle our organic wastes – food waste of all kinds and sewage – where most of the nutrients end up.
