ABSTRACT

This chapter has been concerned with the practice o f the crafts in education. Most of us want our clothes and our gardens and some elements of our environment to be uniquely our own, and here everyone can be a creator. Those who have found in school the satisfaction of producing such pieces of craftsmanship as are illustrated in this chapter may continue to create in this mode all their lives. It can provide opportunities for practising these crafts which have been shown to develop bodily sensitivity, and we can provide the environment in which these two qualities are likely to be nurtured. The children in our care grow up with, at every stage, materials which they can mould and arrange, with tools which they can use to construct, and if they are encouraged to believe that it is their birthright to be adapting the environment around them for use and for pleasure.
