ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the first part will be concerned with the practical difficulties in schools, and the second with methods of firing and glazing. The clay is not expensive if obtained from a local source, and modelling and non-wheel pottery need little equipment. The very plastic type can be stretched, pushed in and out of shape, plaited or coiled, but it must be pressed thin and even and fired slowly under careful control, or it will warp or crack as the gases inside escape from the dense mass. The upper years of adolescence one or two modelling stands and proper tools may be useful for more considered work, but even then the sensitive finger-tips are best to capture impressions and record feelings. Technical help from the local Art School, the class teacher aroused this great interest in modelling among the children. The school of very ancient foundation provides very good facilities for modelling and pottery.
