ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explains the diverse definitions of air power, the four roles of air power, its purposes and functions, and any relevant supporting terms, and also explains the meaning of fighting power. It identifies the key theorists of air power, illustrating some enduring ideas in the conceptualization of air power and the struggle between tactical and intellectual thinking on air power. The book discusses a very important question of what is required for air power to be successful. It investigates the four fundamental roles of air power: control of the air, ISR, attack, and mobility, and their implementation in conventional wars. The book explores the place of air power in counterinsurgent operations, and illustrates the operating specifics of employing air power under strict rules of engagement in a peace support operations environment across the traditional four roles of air power.
