ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we’ll continue our exploration of culturally relevant language and vocabulary instruction by examining instructional methods for teaching students word roots in ways that facilitate connections to language they use in their out-of-school lives. We’ll begin by discussing what this instructional practice is, which we’ll follow by considering why this process can benefit our students. After that, we’ll look at an instructional process to use when putting this idea into action in your own classroom. Finally, we’ll conclude with key recommendations for putting the ideas presented in this chapter into action in your classroom.
