ABSTRACT

Chapter 4 discusses diverse cultural and national contexts for philosophical inquiry. P4C operates in over 60 countries. In all of these, start-up is often small and slow at first. A teacher might organize a lunch or after-school philosophy club. P4C with a single class is the most popular option. Beyond this, more teachers and classes become involved until there is a whole-school plan for delivery, which will survive the disappearance of key teachers. The school may become a beacon school, offering support and training to other schools. Beyond this, a school-district-wide program is the next development. Examples are given of all of these, including projects in far-flung countries like Grenada and India. P4C is also used with adults and many examples of this are given.
