ABSTRACT

Process innovation like new hardware-software systems outsourced to suppliers has been the principle research stream of our work from the very beginning. For this chapter, that means published work on synchronous innovation (SI), which formally appeared in the 1988 book, Taking Charge of Manufacturing. Thirty years has passed quickly, but the SI model lives on in the applied research literature on adoption of new technology systems. Since this approach has endured, it reappears in the last chapter, Innovation by Design, which is the only prescriptive Chapter in the book.
