ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses deception as well as deliberatively contrived or heavily slanted narratives in the direction of the vested interests of institutions, groups, or organizations. As examples, we explore narratives and counter-narratives, deception, and falsehood, associated with this nation’s wars and violent conflicts that operate with the support of and in alliance with the military and defense establishment, financial and business sector, political leadership, federal judiciary, and the media. Relevant legislation is discussed including that of the U.S. Supreme Court in the landmark case. The near monopoly and control of information provided by a media owned by a small number of individuals and corporations is addressed. The role of the forensic professional in providing competent and ethical services is explored given contemporaneous challenges.
