ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview to the academic publishing market and how the publisher fits into the research process; it examines how digital products have offered new solutions to issues of immediacy and access for research. It looks at the challenges of open access for publishers and the changing business models (including hybrid and transformative journals). In particular, it explores the researcher’s digital ecosystem with platforms and initiatives like Orcid so reflecting on the fact that publishers need to integrate effectively with these platforms and ensure their offer is comprehensive to compete with free repositories. It examines transformative journals and Plan S and Projekt Deal in Europe and explores journals publishing in China. It outlines how digital journal publishing and monograph publishing operates in the digital environment and looks at future directions for the academic sector.
