ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at new ways of working for both mainstream and grassroots companies. Mainstream publishing companies which require a lot of data management and content transformation often work with publishing services companies and can face a dilemma about how much work to bring in house or keep offshore. Where they do work with offshore companies, they are developing embedded relationships with external companies that offer opportunities to collaborate and innovate. At the other end of the scale digital technology enables creative entrepreneurs to set up new types of businesses offering alternative approaches to publishing business models, like crowdfunding, or seeking ways to support new diverse audiences, who can be inspirations to traditional publishers, as well as provide opportunities for partnerships in the future.
