ABSTRACT

This chapter examines how technology has transformed the arena for self-publishing. There are many sites and opportunities for authors to publish their own work and market it effectively directly to their readers. Publishers are also becoming involved in this arena in different ways. This chapter also looks at other ways authors connect with readers in alternative spaces as it outlines an emergent definition for reader/writer economies. This is not strictly publishing (fan fiction, for example) but they impact on publishing activity and reflect how technology has provided tools and opportunities for connectivity, where reader–writer relationships are evolving in social writing platforms alongside traditional publishing. Here too there are opportunities for publishers to connect to these creative reading and writing environments and contribute to supporting authors making use of their expertise.
