ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces information architecture as a way to structure content for customers, while it outlines what a content management system is, as a way to store and manage content effectively. The customer or user needs to be able to access and use a product efficiently and easily – it is important therefore for publishers to consider the user experience as they create a product, ensuring the user can use the product easily so that they will continue to use it. It therefore outlines briefly the process when designing a new digital product including use scenarios, information audit, content design, wire frames and user testing, showing how important this is in the development of new digital products. In considering CMS the chapter also reflects on the value publishers add to their content through their expertise at managing content effectively. It concludes with a look at the wider aspects of knowledge management, cloud storage and software as a service.
