ABSTRACT

Apartheid in South Africa was an issue which plagued United States foreign policy for several years. Through the years the United States has persistently emphasised the significance of its ideals for all humanity. In the sphere of foreign policy, one of the most severe challenges for the United States came from South Africa. The analysis made in the preceding pages makes it clear that the United States failed to uphold its self proclaimed ideals in the case of its relations with South Africa. The economic and strategic interests of the United States in South Africa played a crucial role in shaping American policy. Although American trade and investment in South Africa was between 1 per cent and 2 per cent of the former’s global total, in monetary terms these figures were not insignificant amounting as they did to millions of dollars.
