ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the literature on the foreign policy of an authoritarian state and assesses three broad literatures to this end. It develops a theoretical model of the foreign policy of an authoritarian state. It then develops a strategy for measuring the dependent variable in this study – state interests, economic interests, and concern with domestic stability (维稳/weiwen) – and presents the indicators reflecting these three. Moreover, it develops an index of strategic importance and presents the case selection of this study as well as the methods applied to analyze the cases.
