This chapter provides a background illustrating why and how companies can be thought of as separate entities from the political system in China. Particular emphasis is placed on the argument that the separation of economic and state interests makes sense also in the Chinese case. The chapter tells the story of the (flawed) reform process in China and the respective levers of control available to the companies and the government.
