ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the literature around the topic of adults who grew up in care and seek information about their origins, and aims to place the subject in a wider context. It explores the historical context in which a culture of secrecy about origins has led to some adults growing up in ignorance of their past, and looks at the social and legal changes which have created a gradual transition away from severance of biological ties and towards greater openness and partnership with parents. The book explores what the literature tells us about the key issues of separation, loss, and how the experience of substitute care affects those who grow up apart from their birth families. It also explores the relationship between an understanding of one's origins and the development of a sense of identity and self-esteem.
