Navigating conversations about race can be a disempowering experience. We tend to avoid connecting with and listening to each other; we glance at each other and then reach for familiar conclusions. This is how we often approach conversations about race: see a person, judge a person, come to conclusions about a person, and then make it that person’s responsibility to prove to us that they might be different from what we expect.
