ABSTRACT

The iconic story of Sojourner Truth, the 19th century abolitionist and women’s rights activist, is taken up in this work as a guiding thread to explore different feminist approaches to intersectionality. In this introductory chapter, the story of Sojourner Truth and its importance for intersectional feminist scholarship are presented. Rather than understanding the story of Sojourner Truth as an ‘origin story’ for intersectionality, however, the often posited connection between Truth and intersectionality will be critically examined in this work. This will be done by tracing the various reception histories of Truth in academic feminist scholarship, and by drawing on Sojourner Truth as a figure to think with for contemporary feminist debates.
