ABSTRACT
Latent phase The buildup prior to the active first stage of labour which can last for a few days. During this time irregular niggles, backache and mild contractions occur. The cervix also begins to soften and efface (flatten out from a tube to a ring) and dilate. There may be a blood-streaked mucousy show and possibly a spontaneous rupture of membranes.
