ABSTRACT

Middle managers may be defined as a position in organizational hierarchies between the operating core and the apex whose occupants are responsible for a particular business unit at this intermediate level of the corporate hierarchy that comprises all those below the top-level strategic management and above first-level supervision. Raidelli and Sitton-Kent review the literature on middle managers translation of new ideas. The MM/translator moreover uses different tactics to delegitimize opponents as claims-makers during this phase. The phase may be influenced by contingencies related to individual features of the translators, their organizational role and relationship with top managers. The phase includes translator's adoption of a consistent definition of new practices, a review of whether positions should change as a consequence of these new practices and a formalization of the scope of new practices and responsibilities by making related job descriptions.
