ABSTRACT

This chapter considers how Current government policy has built on the strategy and led to the development of a number of different training routes being made available to those wishing to train as teachers. The election of a minority Conservative government supported by the Liberal Democratic Party in 2010 led to a shift from the previous Labour government’s policies. Within the Carter Review there were 18 key recommendations relating to the provision of initial teacher training, with a strong emphasis on the key role of schools in the design, development and delivery of programmes. The Carter Review stresses the fundamental importance of mentors within a school-based system and recognises that effective training is required to overcome any potential inconsistencies in the system. The process of marketisation and continuing reform has transformed the way in which teacher education is provided and the focus of the training process.
